Mexican Drug Cartel Factions Announce Peace Truce Following Fatal Shooting – “We Have Families Too”
Three of Mexico’s Gulf cartel warring factions in a decade-old turf war announced they had reached an agreement on a truce.
Police in the state of Tamaulipas confirmed the professionally printed banners posted in the border city of Reynosa and other Mexican towns on Monday were signed by three of the main factions, the Metros, the Scorpions and the Reds.
It was unclear if a fourth faction, the Cyclones, was part of the peace, but similar banners appearing in Matamoros suggested the Cyclones are on board.
“We have families, too,” read one banner. “We have agreed to a truce of tranquillity, and we declare our solidarity with the people and with ideological principles consistent with keeping the peace.”
Using polite, almost scholarly language, the banners with a picture of a dove with an olive branch followed last month’s killing of 15 bystanders in Reynosa by cartel shooters.
“The Gulf Cartel has principles, and its greatest priority is peace in the state and the well-being of its residents,” stated the banner.
